Our findings are discussed in comparison to recent studies based on cou-pled sea-ice/ocean models and passive-microwave satellite imagery, each investigating different parts of the southern Weddell Sea west-east section at 76° south, north of the A23A iceberg, which hadn’t been possible in the past due to the adverse ice conditions. These measurements will now supplement the data from moorings that have constantly recorded the temperature, depth, salinity and flow speed of water masses in the southern Weddell Sea for the past four years. The biggest section, still called A68a, is 330 square miles, bigger than New York City, with several chunks nearly as large. The breakup of A68a means the largest iceberg is now A23a, which broke off from Antarctica in 1986 but has remained grounded on the sea floor. Though there is another iceberg called A23a that is slightly bigger than A68a, it has not moved from its original position in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf located in the Weddell Sea. A23A is still grounded (top NE corner has only moved from Lng -40.52 Lat -76.06 [2000 Mar 05] to Lng -39.86 Lat -75.66 [2018 Dec 05] over 18.75 years!). It has had a tendency block ice flow to the south and east of the Weddell Sea over this time.
