He also bred them to French foxhounds given to him by his friend the Marquis de Lafayette, a wealthy Frenchman who fought with him in the American War of Independence.

In the middle of the 1700s, fox hunters wanted a dog that could track and chase a fox for long periods of time. To do this, they crossed a variety of hounds such as the Bloodhound, Deerhound, Greyhound, and Staghound with the Fox Terrier, Whippet, and Bulldog to create the English Foxhound.

In addition, this breed is prone to baying and howling, especially if left alone too often. English Foxhounds that are specifically bred for fieldwork tend to be more excitable and will be harder to train. English Foxhounds are smart, strong, gentle, and graceful. They're sociable and great with other dogs, as you'd expect from a breed developed to hunt with its pack.

High energy, it needs a lot of daily exercise. It responds well to leadership and is willing and able to be obedient, but is not as responsive as some breeds and training takes patience and a general understanding of the canine animal. Breed Group: Hound.

English foxhounds bred for fieldwork generally do not make good house pets, because they are too active and hunting oriented to settle for dozing at the family hearth. Show dogs are considered better pets, as long as they receive sufficient physical and mental exercise.

Meet this friendly and energetic breed! The English foxhound is bred to work in a large canine pack, so the dog is happiest when he is part of a multi-dog household. However, this same pack instinct enables the dog to bond quickly with human pack members, too. The English foxhound can be quite vocal; barking and baying highlight his repertoire.

The English Foxhound can, in many ways, be described as the granddaddy of most American hounds. They have been immensely popular in Great Britain since the 16th century, where they are still used as pack hunting dogs. When they made their way to the New World with the British colonists, they were a success, as well. They were bred to hunt foxes, thus becoming the American foxhound. They are the cousin of English foxhounds but primarily came from the states of Maryland and Virginia. They would go on to become the state dog of Virginia.
